I have a lot of mixed feelings about things that happened in 2016 but it has by far been my biggest growth year in photography so far. I hit a lot of goals and pushed myself out of uncertainty to try new things. I also met a lot of great photographers who I learned so much from (shout out to The Photo Ladies). Next year I want to push myself more, do way more portraits (let me know if you want your picture taken :D) cover a huge festival (stress and all lol) and develop stronger relationships with bands. All of these are attainable goals and I look forward to them. So to look back, here are my favorite 16 photos of 2016, hard to narrow down but here they are:
After damaging my D7100 from the rain at All Things Go, I had to use my first camera as a back up while it was being repaired. I hadn't used my D3200 in so long but there was no way I was passing up shooting Chvrches' last show of their tour cycle. So I put my good lenses to work and got shots I was proud of. Plus the pit was pretty empty with plenty of space to shoot.
I had been excitedly waiting months for this show with fingers crossed I could shoot it. Their show opened up with great silhouette lighting and a mood that created this shot.
DC punk bands are some of my favorite to shoot. I had been wanting to cover a Priests show for a while and got the opportunity this past summer. The set was at the Black Cat and I was surprised at how my shots came out with the simple lighting. The red to green lighting transition landed perfectly on Katie.
Every Time I Die
Through some persistence and a 'fuck it' email I was able to shoot Warped tour this year lol. While a lot of photographers do it, it was still a big goal for me and something I wanted to experience. It was long day but a lot of fun and cool moments to capture. I don't listen to ETID but their set was hands down the best to shoot. Half the time the band was in the air and the crowd was just as energetic. I love this shot because Warped was at Merriweather Post Pavilion and it's surrounded by trees which added a cool background to the pics.
I started doing on stage portraits this year and this is shot of letive.'s Jason Butler in Baltimore. He's one of the best frontmen to shoot and puts his emotion all the way out there. I love this shot because it was a quick moment with his face partially covered and smiling while the mic is wrapped around his neck.
Probably my favorite silhouette shot taken this year, X Ambassadors killed the lighting.
AMAZING VOICE this girl has. I was so happy to shoot her set at All Things Go this year. I hope she does more touring next year, would love to take some portrait shots of her as well.
April + Vista
Another DC band I enjoyed shooting this year. This shot was taken at the Smithsonian which is a beautiful place to hear live music. Plus there are several levels above the acts where you can take overhead shots and angles you can't take at regular venues.
This ball of energy was sweet enough to be my first artist I took portraits of before a show. I was nervous but after spending a few minutes with her taking photos and just talking about music and touring, I felt a lot better and comfortable. And the show was great, this photo perfectly sums up Kitten's stage presence.
Crowd Shot during Glass Animals
The two hands up and the cool disco ball did it for me.
Another on stage portrait I really liked. Jenna is very photogenic and the shot came out nice and clean.
I wanted it to look like Yannis was crowdsurfing in space. I love the contrast and the crowd arms in this shot.
I'm so excited for this band's future. I shot them opening up for Paper Route and Zac was so great on stage and interacting with the crowd. If I had to pick my favorite image taken all year this one is definetily in the top 3.
This was my first EDM show to shoot and I didn't know what to expects since most DJs are behind big booths with not too many different angles to shoot at. While this shot doesn't do his set justice with the amazing lighting he had, I really liked this close up of Flume hitting his drum machine.
Less Than Jake
Defintetly one of my favorite action shots from Warped.
I shot my first NWSL game this year and it was the playoff game that the Spirit won taking them to the championship! I've been into watching soccer for over a year now and I was so excited to photograph this game. So as a bonus, here's a shot of Ali Krieger that day - will miss her playing for DC <3
